Blue Smoke - The Barbecue Truth
Not Bad, Just Not Great.. I had lunch at Blue Smoke and left unimpressed. Although the portion size was well worth the price, few things tasted homemade, which is what I expect from a better barbecue joint. The sides tasted like they had come out of a can, except for the macaroni and cheese, which tasted like it came out of a box. The decor was reminiscent of a teacher's cafeteria, as was the food. In short, better than chain fast food, not even close to fine dining. I hope dinner service is better. Nice Smoked Meat Choices Here. This relatively new addition (open about 14 months now) to the Winston Salem barbecue scene serves up some pretty good smoked meat. This is not pit cooked barbecue, the meat here is cooked in a smoker on site. The menu informers customers that this method of cooking will produce meat with a pink or reddish ring or tint, but that the meat is indeed done. This is not the best part, or must traveled area, of Winston, but the building is bright and clean, inside and out. It is setup in a fast food fashion - you place your order up front, pay (cash only), get your drink, and sit and wait for your food, it will be served to you. We tried the combo of 2 meats, and 2 sides for $9.95, and the daily special which was the Chopped Pork Sandwich, Fries, and a drink for $5.95 - some pretty good value there. Drinks go for $1.75. The sandwich was a nice size, fresh bun, and I choose the white slaw The pork is moderately chopped, moist and tender, with some smoke from the cooking method. It is lightly sauced out of the kitchen, and the sauce is more Lexington style than anything else - good flavor, not a lot of zip in the sauce and meat combination. The fries were pretty good. Beef Brisket was excellent - moist, tender, with a nice layer of fat, and a good bit of smokiness, and very good choice here. The Barbecue Chicken (a quarter) was also very good - no thick, red sauce on this bird, just a nice smokey taste, sauce really isn't need, but the sauce on the table doesn't hurt either. The collards were nice, the cheese grits had entirely too much garlic for my tastes. The hush puppies were quite tasty. All in all, this is a nice place for a quick lunch or dinner, with a good variety of choices, decent prices, and nice service. The pork barbecue is middle of the road Lexington style, makes a pretty good sandwich. Brisket and chicken are excellent. The menu here is indeed very similar to Bibs Downtown, but the quality, service, pricing, and environment are much better - you can actually have a conversation here without having to shout.
